In earlier product generations, databases from various third-party providers were used - primarily Oracle and Microsoft SQL. However, this has changed with the introduction of the new database generation SAP HANA.
In the area of SAP Basic Administration there are many tasks that occur at long but irregular intervals, such as adjusting the system modifiability. As a result, the know-how is often lacking and it is quickly taken to the next search engine, where long and partially incomplete forum entries make finding the right approach even more difficult. For this reason, I will regularly record recurring tasks from the SAP basis Administration for you in simple tutorials. This blog post will start with the topic system modifiability and client control. If you want to jump directly to a step-by-step guide, just scroll down to the bottom, where I summarised everything once. System Modifiability - What Is It? The system modifiability allows you to set which objects of the repository and the client-independent customisation are modifiable or not. Repository objects can also be customised even further, with respect to the software component and the namespace. You can choose whether an object should be modifiable, restricted, or non-modifiable. In this context, restrictively modifiable means that repository objects can only be created as non-originals (small note: for packages the setting "restricted modifiable" and "modifiable" is identical in the function). Let us now turn to the direct approach to the changeover to system variability. Change system modifiability As a preparation, you should clarify how long the modifiability should take place in your system. I have learned from my clients that it is often desired to set the system to "changeable" for certain tasks from the specialist areas only temporarily. If you have organised this, call the transaction SE06 in the 000 client and click on the button "System Modification". If you do not have permissions for this transaction, you can try either the transaction SE03 —> System Modifiability or the transaction SE09 -> Jump -> Transport Organiser Tools -> System Modifiability (under "Administration"). The following screenshot shows the way across the SE03: Here you can change the desired namespaces and software components depending on your request.
Solutions for production environments and as proof of concept (PoC)
Following the recommendation of dividing the SAP basis into an application-orientated and infrastructure-related SAP basis [A4], Figure 3 shows a possible presentation form. The SAP-Basis interface function is structured into a SAP basis, which is close to the application and is responsible for coordination and communication with vertical and higher IT specialist and business areas, and a SAP basis close to the infrastructure. The infrastructure-related SAP basis in turn serves as the link between the application-orientated SAP basis and the infrastructure levels. Subject Matter Experts will perform the link task again. In the application-orientated SAP basis, in turn, technology architects are more likely to be placed. The innovation activity or innovation team aspect of the SAP basis is placed at the level of the SAP basis, which is close to the application, because the existing capabilities allow it to assume a leading, also coordinating role and acquire expertise both by adding the SAP basis near the infrastructure and the downstream IT departments. SAP Basis refers to the administration of SAP system that includes activities like installation and configuration, load balancing, and performance of SAP applications running on Java stack and SAP ABAP. This includes the maintenance of different services related to database, operating system, application and web servers in SAP system landscape and stopping and starting the system. In transaction PFUD (see image above), you can perform the user match manually for all roles (or selected roles). You can choose between the matchup types Profile Matchup, Matchup of Indirect Assignments from Composite Roles, and Matchup HR Organizational Management. According to SAP documentation, the matchups differ as follows: Profile Matchup: "The program compares the currently valid user assignments of the selected single roles with the assignments of the associated generated profiles and makes any necessary adjustments to the profile assignments. Matching indirect assignments from composite roles: User assignments to composite roles result in indirect assignments for the single roles contained in the composite role. This match type matches the indirect assignments of the selected single roles to the user assignments of all composite roles that contain the single roles. If the selection set contains composite roles, the comparison takes place for all single roles contained in it. HR Organizational Management comparison: This comparison type updates the indirect assignments of all selected single and composite roles that are linked to elements of HR Organizational Management. The HR adjustment is inactive and cannot be selected if no active plan version exists or if a global deactivation has been made by setting the Customizing switch HR_ORG_ACTIVE = NO in table PRGN_CUST. Furthermore, the option "Perform cleanup" is interesting, which can be selected independently of the three adjustment types and does not refer to the role selection. The Perform Cleanup function can be used to remove residual data that resulted from incomplete deletion of roles and the associated generated profiles.
